GLOBAL – “Today Nokia announced plans for a broad strategic partnership with Microsoft to builds a new global mobile ecosystem” with “Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform”.
Damn. I know this was news that most of the MeeGo community did not want to hear, most would have preferred an alliance with Google (Android) or Even HP (WebOS) or Even the local drunk, but not the opitimy of the closed OS model, Not the evil one MicroSoft.
With this new partnership we will see:
• Nokia adopting Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy.
• Bing powering Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services. Microsoft adCenter will provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.
• Nokia Maps will be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services.
• Microsoft development tools will be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones
• Nokia’s content and application store will be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.
From the press release:
Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year.
Interesting choice of wording, “MeeGo becomes an open-source …” I would like to remind whoever wrote this that MeeGo is open source, and that is without the approval of Nokia.
Nokia are NOT abandoning MeeGo and they see it Extending the scope of Qt with their first MeeGo device which is planned to ship later this year and will be compatible with applications developed within the Qt framework.
So here we are. Many feeling let down, but we see that even with Nokia taking a step back from MeeGo, it can not stop the momentum that MeeGo has attained. For all that see MeeGo as being dead, Please remember
“We are more than the sum of our parts, We, We are MeeGo”

Are you people naive? MeeGo maybe is not dead but don’t expect MeeGo-based handset with Nokia logo anytime soon. Or ever.
Today’s announcement doesn’t say that explicitly but that is exactly what you should read between the lines. Sad but true.
sadly meego is not dead but do the end of maemo uf nokia use wp7…
Really sad, Nokia was a great company with great products but hey! MeeGo will live on and there are a slew of new mobile products coming in the near future.
Meego is not Dead….Form the on-going speeches in london….It certainly shows that Nokia’s tablet will run meego even though it might not be this year…..But a meego phone will be out…Meego can never die…with intel being a partner!!!
Nokia really let me down. I hate Microsoft but they had to partner with it. Elop is not improving Nokia he’s turning it into an evil manufacture like Miccrosoft.
How sad, i’ll never buy an NSERIES running ”BillGates”, looks like i’ll do Apple even though i’ve never even liked it also.
MeeGo i’ll forever love._
MeeGo may not be dead, but this announcement guarantees it will never be more than a niche platform. Nokia are never going to put significant resources into it going forward, and it will just wind up to them like Maemo was, at best. And as much as I loved Maemo, the lack of mainstream appeal was a real kick in the teeth for the platform. So I’m done with Nokia, and I’m not expecting much to come from MeeGo anymore either. I guess I’ll have to buy a Pre3 when it comes out, as WebOS appears to be as close as I will get to a proper Linux phone with mainstream appeal.
This remember me the Nokia World 2009 an Maemo. Sorry, but I don’t think Nokia is going to support MeeGo in the future.
I know only one thing: i’m never going to buy a Nokia WinPhone
Glad to see continued enthusiasm behind MeeGo. Here is the official Intel statement. You will be hearing more at MWC next week.
” While we are disappointed with Nokia’s decision, Intel is not blinking on MeeGo. We remain committed and welcome Nokia’s continued contribution to MeeGo open source.
Our strategy has always been to provide choice when it comes to operating systems, a strategy that includes Windows, Android, and MeeGo. This is not changing.
MeeGo is not just a phone OS, it supports multiple devices. And we’re seeing momentum across multiple segments – automotive systems, netbooks, tablets, set-top boxes and our Intel silicon will be in a phone that ships this year.”
This article made me chucle. It’s like that Comical Ali fella in Iraq ranting and raving about how the Americans had been defeated, and there were frickin American tanks going past him in the background. I think this is the end of the road for Meego, without Nokia’s support, it is never going to be picked up as a smartphone platform by any other manufacturer, as Android has way too much steam behind it. Ditto for tablets, looks like iOS and Android are too far ahead. I don’t know who would consider Meego on a netbook, when this area is totally dominated by Windows. Yeah we’ll get the N9 release this year, but it’ll be another N900 type device, bought by very few people who want it for specific reasons, the masses will just go elsewhere.
Is an opitimy similar to an epitome?
HI friends,
Now nokia and WP7 are becoming seller’s choice and not buyer’s choice.
