Below is a Press statement from Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation.
“The Linux Foundation is disappointed in Nokia’s decision today to choose Microsoft as the primary platform for its mobile phones. Tough times give birth to difficult decisions that we don’t always agree with, but open source is — at its core — about choice. We believe that open source software is more than a sum of its parts, and the market is currently bearing that out. The Linux Foundation is here to enable collaboration among its members and the Linux community, and we invite participation in MeeGo and any of our other many projects and programs. In its 20th anniversary year, Linux is a significant underpinning in every computing segment. Full steam ahead.”
Jim echoes a lot of the sentiments of the Open Source community. Should we mourn an old friend or should we carry on, Full steam ahead.
I know what I’m doing
What about you ?

Well, I’m getting drunk at this very moment.
“Should we mourn an old friend or should we carry on, Full steam ahead.”
Or both?
Nokia, I hope, will come to regret this decision before it is too late – the only winner here is Microsoft.
Well, instead of talking about today’s events I want to use this opportunity to say you are doing a very good job, especially on your Twitter account, I can resist one thousand @justinbieber ‘s to read your tweets. Keep up the good work =)
On-topic: Full. Steam. Ahead!
Very disappointing news with respect to both Meego and QT. While they are both still in a strong position, I think many were looking forward to the boost that widespread adoption via Nokia handsets would have given.
Perhaps the ‘year of the linux mobile’ is next year?
What I would like to know is who will be launching mobiles with Intel chips (and Meego). To be honest I don’t care if it is Nokia or not. Is there anything to stop a company like HTC launching a Meego handset?
HTC, LGE, ZTE, etc. will kill whatever is left of Nokia. After today, most people that used to appreciate Nokia for their quality phones won’t touch one with a pair of pliers.
FOSS is the future – full steam ahead!
They will be proven wrong, as Jim Zemlin rightly points out, the momentum is actually with levaraging open source software.
I too am very sad, as Nokia were actually a real supporter of open source and I believe with MeeGo they would have begun to turn things around. Elop’s assessment was that it would take too long, but I just find it hard to believe. Just look at the Nokia employees walking out, and I don’t think just because there jobs are on the line, it’s a total 180 turn, and it looks ill-considered and desperate. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just an ideological move, as it seems very counter to innovation.
I’m with Fred: mourn AND carry on. I hope…
I`m so disapointed to ! I choose symbian & nokia in 2003 because stability and fiability. I realy don`t like WM. Lately i go for Maemo and i expect from Nokia more in this direction. The future in my opinion, is Meego. This is the perfect response to Android invasion.I don`t wanna buy a Nokia WM device.Verry, verry disapoint.
